Rules of etiquette - There are a good number of rules that govern etiquette that should be adhered to when attending a club and playing a round or two of golf. Hardly any golf clubs will permit a golfer to attend the club and play without abiding by and knowledge of the rules of the club. That said, the strictness in enforcing the rules can differ from one golf club to another. These rules that govern etiquette relate to anything from dress code and play style, to conduct and time keeping.
The marshals of etiquette - Golf clubs use people who act as marshals who monitor how people conduct themselves, and to politely advise them when required.
The dress code - One of the well known areas of etiquette is dress code. The dress code can vary greatly between golf clubs. All golf clubs will require golfers to to be attired in actual golf shoes when playing on the golf course. The reason for this is the special types of grass that is used on the golf course, that is needed in order to create the desired effect (e.g. Seemingly smooth, effect on the putting green very like that on the surface of a snooker table).
When within the club house, many golf clubs require that people wear smart gear, with trousers with long legs (not jeans), although many golf clubs will permit golf shorts to be worn. Trainers and the like must not be used whilst playing on the golf course, and a lot of clubs will not permit them to be used while in the golf club.
Where not to get changed - Rules that govern etiquette are even applied to where people are allowed or in this case not allowed to change clothes. Many golf clubs do not allow people to change clothes in the parking area, this also includes to changing shoes.
Modern day menace - Mobile phones are not generally tolerated on golf courses, but if they must keep them near their person, then they should to be powered off, and put out of the way.
Don't be tardy - Good time keeping and punctuality are very important when attending a golf club to play a round or two of golf. It is recognised as bad etiquette to be tardy, and to hinder other people. This applies not just to making the start of the game on time, but also whilst playing. It is definitely frowned on to play too slowly, and if anyone is found to be obstructing other players due to the length of time they are taking at every hole, they will be politely informed by a marshal, and tell the offender to quicken their shot.
Rules of etiquette when playing in a group - When playing with other players, the rules by which the group plays must be set out clearly to all within the group, and for all in the group to live by those rules. Also, whilst a golfer is taking their turn, the other people in the group must be respectful and be quiet, and keep out of the golfer's line of sight.
Finally - In the end, study the rules, live by the rules, and be respectful to the other people and the golf club. And above all else, enjoy this magnificent sport and the people who are part of it.
