When many people as me how to sell things on eBay, one of the first questions that comes up is how to choose a successful niche. Most eBay gurus will stress the importance of choosing a niche and sticking with it before you even start to sell things on eBay. While settling on a niche will eventually be an important part of amassing your eBay wealth, the likeliness of finding your perfect niche right off the bat is sometimes more of a complication than the gurus lead one to believe. I always suggest potential eBay sellers to pick a few different niches that they might be interested in and test each one before setting on which niche to stick with. There are a 3 important questions you need to ask yourself before you settle on a niche to sell things on eBay and I'm going to cover each one below.
Do you know a lot about the item you're interested in selling? To start, it's important that your niche be something that you're knowledgeable about. Odds are, the people that will be looking to buy your product will know more about the item than you do. If you don't cover every single detail of the item in your description, chances are you will be getting questions from potential buyers that will send you running to Google to find the answers. It can save you a lot of time and frustration if you already know the answers to the majority of questions that could possibly be asked about the item.
Is the item you're trying to sell profitable on eBay? The truth is that you can sell anything on eBay. The truth is also that you can't sell everything on eBay for a profit unless you have a wholesaler who will sell you the item low enough to actually make a profit. So perhaps, the real question is, can you find a wholesaler for the product that will sell to you low enough to where you can still make a profit. This is one large factor that can kill the idea of the niche you want to sell faster than anything. Many wholesalers have moved onto eBay to get rid of their excess stock at ridiculously low prices, cutting out the eBay middle man. Does the product you want to sell already have such a wholesaler on eBay monopolizing it?
Is the item you want to sell easy to ship? The importance of this question really depends on you. Generally speaking, it's much easier and less expensive to ship small light weight objects that don't require thick packaging or lots of packing material. It also means fewer trips to the post office.
Once you have the answers to these 3 questions, you should be able to narrow down your list of niches to the item that will be best for you to sell. Don't throw away that list yet though, because you never really know how an item is going to perform until you actually try to sell it. There might be unexpected complications that you hadn't thought of. I always recommend buying a few test products to sell before you invest in a load of inventory. Testing before investing can save you tons of money. Whatever niche you decide to go with, once you find something that works, stick with it and build on it. That is the key to becoming a successful eBay PowerSeller.
