OFW is a short cut terminology for Overseas Filipino Worker which is commonly referred to us, Filipinos working abroad. We are contracted to work outside our home country for one year, two years or three years. On the average we had to complete our one year contract before we could take an annual vacation. This is really quite hard for a family oriented people like us.

You might wonder how we celebrate Mother’s Day considering we are not with our families and loved ones. In our country, the Philippines, we celebrate it every second Sunday for the month of May. Yes, as an OFW, we do celebrate it even it is difficult for us because we are away from her for a long time. But why we have to bear this loneliness? Well, we have no choice; our country’s economic condition is not that good unlike the other countries. How strong willed are we? How did we survive? How did we bear the loneliness and sorrow brought about the separation? What is our secret? Well, I will tell you now.

Well, I am not too familiar with other countries traditions or customs, but I personally never heard about Mother’s day until I became an overseas contract worker. I missed my mother too much and only then that I appreciated her love and the way she cared for me and for all of my brothers and sisters too. Through her letters I was able to bear the loneliness of being away from home. Through her advice and motivation I was able to complete my first one year contract.

Perhaps you will agree with me that Mother’s Day Celebration, is to honor, respect, and most of all let her know, let her feel your love and affection. We do give some gift like sending her flowers, greeting cards, a gift coupon and or gift checks perhaps. But these material things are not really important. What really matter is your presence to show your love for her. Let her feel that you truly care for her health and happiness.

Everyday is a Mother's day for me. I felt that everyone whose mother is staying with him/her should be celebrating everyday. You do not have to be away from her to learn that. Express your love for her.

What is the most valuable gift that I am going to give her on this coming Mother’s Day?
Well, since I am working abroad and she is in our home country, I could not hug her and tell her personally that I love her so much. Luckily, we have the technology to send our messages via Internet and Mobile Cell Phones; we can send our Greetings very easily.

In conclusion, on this Special Day, no material thing can replace your personal presence with your Mother on her special day. There is no doubt about that. I wish I could take a leave from my work, but I can not right now. For those OFWs who are scheduled to go on their annual vacation, I encourage you to visit your Mother right away. Spend more time with her as much as you can. I am sure she will appreciate it more seeing you in person rather than just sending her gifts.

We all know that life is too short, for all the Overseas Filipino Contract Workers out there, if you have not visited your Mother for some time now, try your very best to visit her on your next home coming. Meanwhile, pick up your Cell Phone now and send your tender loving care messages to them. I wish you all a very happy mother’s Day.
